Confirmation: Balotelli posted these images of Fanny wearing a ring and the place he popped the question to Instagram

His collage also included an image of what is believed to be the setting of his proposal –  a location near Mangarabita, where the Italian team are residing during the World Cup.

Over the years the couple have had rather tumultuous relationship, with Fanny in the past using social media to declare she was single.

But despite any troubles they have had Balotelli has always been keen to tie the knot to her and previously stated that he could 'spend his whole life with someone like this'.

The footballer is father to a little girl called Pia with former girlfriend Raffaella Fica, who was born in December 2012.

At the time Balotelli claimed he would only assume parental responsibilities if there was a positive paternity test.

It was not until February 2014 that he acknowledged he was in fact her father, following a positive DNA test.

The news comes just a few days ahead of Italy's opening game of the World Cup against England on Saturday.

Balotelli is expected to start up-front on his own for Cesare Prandelli's side, leaving him in direct opposition with his former City team-mate Joe Hart.
