Govt to penalise negligent contractor

The government has pledged to take stern disciplinary measures against a contractor who has abandoned a multimillion Mwanjolo dam project in Meatu District, Shinyanga Region.

Deputy Minister for Water Amos Makalla told the National Assembly yesterday, saying the ministry is liaising with the Contractors Registration Board (CRB) to have the contractor barred from executing any projects in and outside the country.
Makalla was responding to a supplementary question put forward by Richard Ndassa (Sumve, CCM) who wanted to know measures taken by the government against the negligent contractor.

Responding to Meshack Opolukwa’s (Meatu, Chadema) basic question which required the government to state the status of the Mwanjolo dam project and amount of money spent so far, Makalla said construction works at Mwanjolo dam stalled after the contractor absconded.

“The ministry, through its experts has conducted investigations and surveyed the executed work and the pending ones. Our experts are at the final stages of completing their investigation report,” said the deputy minister.

He however said the government has embarked on a process of obtaining another contractor to complete the project, with 428m/- allocated for the project in the ministry’s 2014/15 budget estimates.  The mega project which has so far cost 819m/-, intends to supply water to 7,420 people and 42,526 livestock,” added the deputy minister.
